There is a kind of dance in the design world over what the next “hip” animal will be. Seeing the Echino Fall 2011 collection, I imagine Etsuko Furuya popping and locking herself into the center ring and doing her classic moves. Birds. Deer. Owls. And everyone thinks, daaaaaamn, some say they’re played out now, but [...]
Japanese cotton-linen blend, spotted at This and That From Japan.
I love this mod menagerie by designer Dani Choate, who sells her fabrics, paper goods, and soft toys through her Etsy shop pyglet whispers. She is even running a special right now on packs of mixed fat quarters.
Cotton canvas animal print from Felt Cafe. I thought the artist was Ed Emberley, but maybe that’s just because I ordered Ed Emberley fabric from Felt Cafe in the past?
Loving these animal fabrics — they look like vintage cereal mascots. Available from a few Etsy shops: Karaku, This and That From Japan, and World of Kawaii.
A couple years ago there was a Japanese line of Ed Emberley products in Japan (totes and clocks and other goods … you can still find the totes online but I’m not so sure of the other stuff). I was puzzled why it didn’t make it over here. Does any American child of the 1960s [...]
This is turning out to be the “weirdly rendered animals of spring.” This one is from vintage children’s fabric collector extraordinaire vasiliisa (blog | shop). She asks, “but why is the hedgehog crying?”
I’m basking in the birthday glow today — THANK YOU so much for the sweet birthday wishes! I even teared up a little reading them. So I’ll just post a Daily Swatch today, and then I’ll be back tomorrow with an awesome interview with Josephine Kimberling. Above: Vintage Bunny Fabric, from Luck(x8) (shop — check [...]
Weird lambs, part of my own collection.
Vintage Miffy fabric, from whimsylove (shop) on Flickr. Miffy has been around since 1953 and has never been popular in the U.S. (as far as I know) … though I recently saw stuffed Miffies at some big box stores so maybe we’re finally catching on.
Blue and green bunnies romping rose garden, part of my collection. This is a semi-sheer fabric of some kind, with 1/2″ squares of alternating horizontal-vertical texture lines. The effect is really lovely and subtle; I wish it was more visible in this scan!
The Daily Swatch shows one piece of vintage fabric (almost) every day. Themes change periodically. You are welcome to add your own examples of the theme to the True Up and/or Vintage Fabric Flickr Pools! Happy spring holiday of your choice! It’s sheep, chicks, ducklings and bunnies all week. Above: Counting sheep, a vintage thrifted [...]
Detail of vintage Waverly Glosheen pattern Forest Friends (more here, here, here, here, and here), from the famous Stitchy McYarnpants (blog) on Flickr. This is now my pick for the #1 most awesome fabric in existence.
Sheep in Sheep Houses, from the collection of vasiliisa on Flickr. I didn’t notice at first, but houses have sheep head and sheep feet. Isn’t that the oddest/coolest thing? In case you want to add a dose of surrealism to your kid’s bedroom …
Horses & carriage rayon, c.1950s, 42″ wide, $18/yard, from Antiquefabric.com.
