Connecting Threads Fabric Design Contest

Sorry for the late notice, but Connecting Threads is holding their second fabric design contest! The entry deadline is August 10, 2013. All the details are above, but read it at a more comfortable scale here and follow the link to additional details.

New IKEA Fabrics

Here are some of the newest print fabrics available now at IKEA, with a selvage-to-selvage and a close-up view. Take a look at the woodgrain print — do you suppose IKEA is experimenting with digital printing?

Austin Shop Hop

shop hop map

My home town of Austin, TX used to be a barren wasteland when it came to fabric. Now we have a great variety of stores with every kind of fabric for every kind of sewing, and (for the most part, I think!) the new crop of stores all get along and support each other. The Austin Shop Hop grew out of that camaraderie and hopefully it’ll be successful and grow into a regular thing. It takes place over two days, August 10-11, 2013. The list of shops includes places that aren’t normally open to the public, so this is your rare chance to access some fabrics (like Bunny Designs’ Cosmo fabrics and Form & Fabric‘s inventory), and all will have special treats and discounts for participants. Get all the details here.

Liberty Art Fabrics AW13

{ Manning digital print from the Seen group }

The AW13 Liberty Art Fabrics collection is a unique interpretation of the five senses theme. Using the William Morris poem ‘The Earthly Paradise,”  as a taking off point, the collection is divided into six groups: Audio (a collaboration with actress Tamsin Greig), Fragrance (large florals, naturally), Seen (inspired by the landscapes of Iceland), Taste (fruit and candy conversationals), and, representing touch, Tattoo, for which the studio collaborated with tattoo artist Mo Coppoletta. How could you not include the Sixth Sense? Their sixth sense is “A Sense of Liberty,” a group of their famous small-scale florals. These are some of my favorite prints — you can see them all here.

Spring Quilt Market 2013: Birch Fabrics

Birch Fabrics‘ organic collections for the rest of 2013 and into 2014 include an expanded basics collection from Jay-Cyn Designs, quite a few new, exciting licensed designers, and some returning designers. Let’s start the show!

The inspiration for Elk Grove, and the companion collections Elk Grove Knits and The Grove canvas, comes from Birch Fabric’s home town of Paso Robles, CA. I didn’t picture the central coast to be full of oak trees, woodpeckers, and deer, did you? The knits, by the way, are high-quality, 200 gsm interlock, perfect for baby clothes, bibs, burp clothes, blankets, and of course clothes.

Just for Fun, also by Jay-Cyn Designs, is new this month. It’s sort of a novelty basics line, designed to coordinate with their Mod Basics and Mod Basics 2 collections.

Eiko, available in August, is inspired by the Jay half of Jay-Cyn’s late grandmother. Eiko was a Japanese immigrant to the U.S. Jason spent a lot of time with her and she instilled in him a love for Japanese culture and design. We don’t have pictures of it but you can see it here.

Fort Firefly is by children’s book illustrator Teagan White, due in mid-September. Fort Firefly is a bit of a woodland fairytale. Penny and her critter friends can be found setting up for a tea party, stringing jars of fireflies, and decorating their tree fort. You will also find them getting their campfires ready for a good ghost story.

The much-anticipated Charley Harper collection is due in November. The late Mr. Harper continually inspires the art community with his iconic, graphic animal illustrations. Birch collaborated with Todd Oldham Studios, who has spent the last several years documenting and digitizing Mr. Harper’s designs. There are plans not only for quilting cottons but for knits, flannel, and canvas. This one is going to be huge!

Ipanema is the debut collection from designer Dennis Bennett. It’s all about Bossa Nova and the laid-back vibe of Rio in the 1960s. Ipanema will be out in November 2013.

Poster artist Dan Stiles is back in January 2014 with Marine Too. It brings back some of the most popular prints from the original Marine collection but supported by six new designs.

Nesshome is a Korean craft brand/shop/community with its own line of fabric. They are starting to pop up around Etsy but Miss Matatabi has my favorite prints (and of course you can pick up some Nani Iro and other Kokka favorites while you’re there).

Summersville: Formica

Formica is the newest hand-screenprinted fabric from UK designer Lu Summers, aka Summersville. The lovely textured print is done on a natural cotton, available in four colorways and even custom colors if you ask nicely. It is sold by the 9.5 x 14″ piece.

Juliana Horner: Rosette

Joann Fabrics is really stepping it up with their premium quilt collections, which are produced by the company Fabric Traditions. Their lastest is Juliana Horner‘s debut collection Rosette (Juliana is the daughter of another fabric designer you may have heard of). This is like the rookie card of the fabric world, better go get some to hoard now!
