Action Kivu Fundraiser

Alissa of Handmade by Alissa is leading a fundraiser for the organization Action Kivu, with which her twin sister Cate works. I’ll let Alissa tell you more about them:

[Action Kivu is] an organization in eastern Congo that runs a sewing workshop for victims of the conflict there. The conflict in Congo has taken the lives of over 5.4 million people since 1998. Rape is used as a weapon of war, with estimates putting the number of rapes in the hundreds of thousands.

Needless to say, this specific organization, with its link to sewing and women, really strikes a personal chord in me and I suspect, with many of you as well. Our online sewing community is so blessed to be able to pursue our love of sewing as a hobby, career, or just for fun, but for these women, learning to sew is life changing and gives them hope for their futures.

The Action Kivu sewing workshop of course costs money to run and they need supplies – sewing machines and more. I am launching this fundraiser to raise the money for their supplies (and Action Kivu’s other activities should we raise over $7500) and I hope that you’ll join me by giving what you can. All donations are tax deductible.

She’s almost reached the goal of $7500 so has upped the ante to $10,000. I challenge you to help make that happen. Visit Alissa’s site to donate.

And what’s more …

Donate $25 and qualify for 8 Heather Ross Fat quarters. Donate $50 and qualify for 96 fat eighths in a colorwheel bundle. Donate $75 and qualify for 45 fat eighths of ultra-hard-to-find Flea Market Fancy (that’s the whole collection!).

Textile Stew: 8/25/10

Two cool things happening tomorrow (8/26/10):

Spoonflower’s second Free Swatch Day starts at noon EST and runs through noon the next day. Details here.

And if you’re anywhere near Berlin, don’t miss this Organic Cotton Info Event co-sponsored by Volksfaden. Details here.

And speaking of Spoonflower, Rayela’s Fiber Focus has posted a tutorial by Helend Klebesadel on how she sets up repeats of her floral paintings for printing with Spoonflower.

This post on Fabric Flair alerted me to this lovely floral tablecloth at Target — of course I had to go buy one.

Rashida Coleman-Hale (I Heart Linen) is writing another book and will have a fabric collection with Timeless Treasures next year too. Double congratulations Rashida! To celebrate, she’s giving away lots of fabric courtesy Timeless Treasures, as well as an Ann Kelle for Robert Kaufman bundle courtesy of Fabricworm.

Everything you need to know about interfacing. Bookmarked!

Pink Chalk Fabrics has started a weekly giveaway called Fat Quarter Tuesday. The inaugural offerings are Laurie Wisbrun’s Urban Circus and Cloud 9 Organic Forest Friends Flannel.

Jona Giammalva of Fabritopia fame has launched a sewing pattern line … sweet!

Checking in With EmilyMe

EmilyMe is one of the most unusual shops I’ve ever featured on True Up (previous post here). Her fabrics are hand-printed by a family operation in Bangkok that has been in business since the 50s. They print only about 30 yards of each design (taken from their archive of over 1,000 designs) on a cotton fabric with 10% polyester content, and EmilyMe only buys a portion of each run, so her offerings are always changing. Here are some of the current oh-so-70s fabrics in her shop now.

Preview: Queen Street by Jennifer Paganelli

Queen Street will be Jennifer Paganelli‘s next collection. I like the 3-D effect of Dolin (how’d they do that?) and the dots that are like Kei Dots only not so much money! It’s her signature color palette and style with a bit of a 70s twist.

Digital Fabric of the Week: Julia Monroe

Fabric Tote

Granny Square printed on Quilting Weight Cotton

These two prints were designed by Julia Monroe and form a mini 70s fabric collection. The houses were reproduced from a felt-on-burlap piece she made when she was 12, and the granny squares were inspired by an afghan she made with her mom. I love the idea of using digital textile printing to preserve childhood art, I just never thought of using my own art! Both prints are available for sale on Spoonflower.

Preview: Greenfield Hill by Denyse Schmidt

Denyse Schmidt has posted previews of her Fall 2010 collection, Greenfield Hill, on her website (hop over here to see the other two colorways). I love her description:

Inspired by Ladies’ League luncheons and Preservation Society socials, Greenfield Hill evokes afternoon teas, polite gossip, the faded wallpaper in Mrs. So-and-so’s drawing room, the slightly musty library on the green, and motoring on a perfect, crisp and sunny day.

Greenfield Hill will debut at Quilt Market in Houston and be in stores in November. It will be available in quilting weight cotton and voile. Hooray voile!

Thanks to Jenny for the heads-up.
