Felt Week: Sunfelt (With Giveaway!)

Punching Felt by Sunfelt

Punching Felt by Sunfelt-4

Ha ha, you thought the Quilt Market posts were over, but I just had to withhold this one for felt week. Last year’s post about Sunfelt of Japan was a popular one, and I still get emails about where to find their products. (Short Answer: Superbuzzy and Lit’l Brown Bird!) Last year, there were all kinds of die-cut shapes, felt food, and ribbons to ogle over; this year, Sunfelt was promoting their new line called Punching Felt. These are sheets of felt with shapes punched out of them, creating a patterned surface. They look great layered over solid felt or regular solid or patterned cottons. There are hearts, circles, flowers, and donuts, each available in a rainbow of colors. I’m not sure when this will be available, but a cursory Google search tells me that no one has it yet. Thanks to reader fujiapple, I now know it’s 100% polyester — but leave it to the Japanese to create a synthetic felt that you’d never know was synthetic. It looks like wool and seems much sturdier than cheap acrylic felt.

Sunfelt Punching Felt

And, why, yes, I did bring you home a roll for you! This is the donut pattern in a gorgeous peacock blue, 450×350mm (a little under 14×17 inches). To be eligible to win, leave a comment with an idea of how to use this insanely awesome felt. I will draw a winner next week, Wednesday, November 18, around 2pm Central U.S. time.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: What I Missed

Today marks the end of my Fall Quilt Market coverage. About 40 posts! Are you sick of it? Looking forward to returning to the normal posting routine?

I just wanted to give shout-outs to the companies and people I missed. Quilt Market is so big, people, seriously. Three days going full speed and I still didn’t get to see all the fabrics I wanted to see. Some I saw and just neglected to photograph. Here are most of them (but I’m sure I missed a few!) …

gloriahallfeedsackmorningsonggloriahallfeedsackmorningsong

Andover has Lizzy House’s Castle Peeps, Cosmo Cricket’s Snorkel, Gloria Hall’s Feedsack repro lines, and Erinn Kennedy’s Fancy Free. I have a CD with images from all these lines that I’d love to show you, but since most of these ladies have blogs, I’ll give them first dibs at the reveal! But I think it’s OK to show you some of the artwork from Gloria Hall’s upcoming Feedsack Morningsong (above).

Cynthia Mann of Fabricworm and Birch Fabrics was my market buddy this year! I got to see the strikeoffs of Circa 50, which looked awesome. Can’t wait for that one!

Last year I happily stumbled upon the Canada-based Camelot Cottons. I didn’t make it by to see them this year, unfortunately. Check out their website — some cute stuff new stuff is coming out like What a Hoot. Urban Squares is also very interesting and I’d love to see it in person.

Clothworks: I wanted to see Woodland Friends and meet designer Ellen Crimi-Trent (blog) in person! The Clothworks website has all their upcoming collections through Spring 2010 up now.

I saw Michelle Engel Bencksko of Cloud9 several times and got to meet her business partner Gina Pantastico, but they were always so busy (which is a great thing) that I never got to relax in their serene booth or document their lovely followup to My Happy Garden, Beyond the Sea (delivering March 2010).

Henry Glass has some lovely current and upcoming collections — not only from our friend Michelle but also Amy Hamberlin (Kati Cupcake), Anne Sutton (Bunny Hill Designs), Barbara Jones (Quilt Soup), Bev Proulx, and Linda Lum DeBono.

Hoffman Fabrics: In addition to their beautiful batiks, I also wanted to check out their upcoming print collections, since the new Tweet Tweet by Jillian Phillips and Petal Punch have caught my eye.

Aunt Grace Authentics

Marcus Fabrics: Aunt Grace by Judie Rothermel is the 1930s reproduction, and I always enjoy seeing each new season’s prints. Next month sees the release of Aunt Grace Authentics. Plus I wanted to see if Prints Charming has anything on the horizon …

Moda, oh Moda. I tried to see your future fabrics, but failed. On the plus side, I got to meet Angela Yosten, who is responsible for the daily feats of strength witnessed on the Moda Bake Shop; see the Home Collection, and take pictures of the quilts and meet some of the designers. But no Tula Pink! Again! Noooooooo!

P&B I did visit with P&B, but neglected to take any pictures! The biggest news from them is their alliance with Lilla Rogers Studio. I know you all are excited about Caroline Gavin’s Wild Thyme (December 2009) … well hold on to your hats; Helen Dardik and Jenn Ski will have collections with them next year too. Woohoo! I can’t wait! These designs aren’t even on paper yet, else I would taken pictures for you.

heycowboy

I think the hand-drawn cowboys and cowgirls in Laura Heine’s collection Hey Cowboy! for RJR are awesome. They also have a new basics collection of dots & stripes that will help us sate the appetite that Lecien’s hard-to-find Color Basics has created. Their ongoing 30s collection Everything But the Kitchen Sink has a new round coming out soon. Supernova has some awesome photorealistic astronaut prints, perfect for the science kids. And speaking of photorealistic, I have one word for you: DONUTS.

Red Rooster Fabrics: Have you seen Amy Barickman’s (Indygo Junction) new Sew It Book collection? We’re planning an interview with Amy, so all is not lost. She also has A Stitch in Time coming out, a 1930s repro line. But I so wanted to meet Amy in person! Kicking myself!

Sunfelt: Last year I posted about Sunfelt, the Japanese felt fabric and felt crafts company, and I still get emails inquiring where people can find their products. Actually, I do have pictures from Sunfelt this year, and a lovely piece of felt for a giveaway, but I’m saving them for an upcoming felt series. In case you were wondering!

lily-c6214-white_pink

Timeless Treasures: Apple by Alice Kennedy was such a hit, I wanted to see what else was on the horizon. Looks like it’s Lily, which is a cool experiment in one-color design. Love those florals!

And this has to be the screw-up of the year: If it didn’t have its own booth at Westminster/Freespirit, I didn’t see it. Which means I neglected to document California Dreamin’ by Jenean Morrison (though I did get to her schoolhouse and got to hang out with her at the Fabric 2.0 party!), Tanya Whelan’s lovely Dolce, Annette Tatum’s House, Denyse Schmidt’s Hope Valley, and their designer woven solids and knits. And I saw Jay McCarroll and his sis briefly at Fabric 2.0, but didn’t get to talk to him much before he was surrounded!

So, what do you say, Quilts Inc. — can we make Market five days long from now on?

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Moda Quilts

Moda Display

I didn’t manage to see Moda’s new fabric collections by themselves at this market, but we can get a good idea of what’s on the horizon from the quilts they had on display.

Lauren and Jessi Jung

Lauren and Jessi Jung

Lauren and Jessi Jung are a daughter and mother team, living in Philadelphia and Spartanburg, SC (respectively). This is their debut fabric collection, called Botany. They have a beautiful and interesting website (with six free dowloadable patterns already!) and blog. Not sure when Botany will be available — early 2010, I’m thinking!

Tula Pink

Tula Pink

Tula Pink’s newest is Plume. See the story of this quilt here. Oh Ms. Pink, how did I miss you? Again?!?

American Jane

American Jane

American Jane’s Sandy Klop is taking a surprising turn with her next collection to antique French Provincial reproductions. It’s cool to see these colors and designs worked into American Jane’s signature vintage quilt designs.

Howard Marcus

The next Howard Marcus Collection for a Cause is this lovely mixture of orange and brown. I love this quilt. Please give it to me.

Joanna Figueroa

I got to meet Joanna Figueroa of Fig Tree & Co. right as Quilt Market was shutting down. After four days of constant talking my voice made me sound like a chain smoker, and hers was almost gone altogether! Her newest is called Whimsy — technically a kid’s line but only two of the prints are overtly kid-themed … the rest are ageless, and the Whimsy colors integrate perfectly into the signature Fig Tree palette. Joanna is also introducing a collection of high-quality snuggle fabrics. Can you believe how beautifully they quilt up?

Chez Moi

Chez Moi

Chez Moi’s next collection, which will be available this December, is called Boutique. That landscape print in the center of the quilt really caught my eye.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Robert Kaufman (With Giveaways!)

Robert Kaufman’s hottie marketing department (Kyle, Emmie, and Ally) showed me nearly the entire year’s worth of upcoming releases. Some of the most exciting things I saw were Josephine Kimberling’s next line, scheduled for mid-late 2010; and Amy Schimler’s On a Whim II (January 2010 release). Keep an eye on the designers’ blogs for the big unveilings!

Here are other lovelies that you can expect in the near future from RK. You’ll notice a lot of designers from the scrapbooking world, which seems to be a big trend lately.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Michael Miller — Designers

Sandi HendersonSandi Henderson introduces her new Meadowsweet

I’d like to think my lack of pictures from the Michael Miller designers’ booths indicates that I was entranced by the gorgeous designs and riot of rich, happy color, and was just living in the moment. But I was entranced by everyone I covered, so that’s no excuse. I have distinct memories of taking more pictures of Sandi Henderson’s creations, but the memories must have been implanted because the images are nowhere to be found. Ah well, chalk it up to fatigue/overstimulation!

Fortunately, Jona (Fabritopia) covered the MM designer booths thoroughly, including Pillow & Maxfield and Patty Young. Ms. Ever Kelly recaps here and here. Patty Young recaps her Schoolhouse session, gives the full tour of her booth, and shows compromising (OK, not really) party shots from Fabric 2.0 and the Michael Miller anniversary party here. Sandi has plenty of video of her favorite designers and pictures of her booth. And her famous shoes. Oh, those shoes! She has also posted a (free) fabric pinwheel pattern — so cute and easy.

I did manage to document Paula Prass’ booth, so there’s hope for me yet.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: New York Fabric

Olde New York Subway Map

At last year’s Fabric 2.0 party I met Jeremy, April, and Kristy from NYC shop The City Quilter. They must have said nice things about me because City Quilter owner Dale Riehl sought me out this year to meet me. I learned about their exclusive collection of New York-themed fabrics. Sewers and quilters have to visit the local fabric shops when they travel, so it makes perfect sense to have locally themed fabrics to offer as a souvenir, not to mention locals who want to sew a bit of home into their projects. All shops should be lucky enough to carry locally themed fabrics … but it takes a big city to support the minimums that mills require!

The subway fabric is my favorite — who doesn’t love maps? Dale explained that they had to creatively reinterpret the real map in order to put it into the allover repeat. So if you buy this fabric, don’t use it to get around. It actually required licensing and design approval from the Metro Transit Authority.

Olde New York Subway Map-2

The 1930s postcards in the Olde New York print depict the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Chrysler Building, Flatiron Building, and many other landmarks, and come in three colorways.

Olde New York Postcards-2

The City Quilter also carries several other New-York-themed prints by Alexander Henry, Hoffman, and other manufacturers — and you don’t have to live in or visit New York to get them; they’re all available through their website or by phone order.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Blue Hill Fabrics

paper dolls - panel

New York City-based Blue Hill Fabrics is the newest manufacturer on the scene. They’re only a couple months old, composed of a group of ex-Windham Fabrics employees. (Their website is still in progress, but here’s the link for posterity.) Leslie Sonkin (above) showed me their debut collections — a mixture of fresh, contemporary designs (we’ve already seen Party Dress by Mo Bedell); 19th century reproductions; and antique reproductions with a twist.

First up, we have Aunt Lindy’s Paper Dolls by SiblingArts Studio, which will be in stores in February 2010. It seemed to be the talk of market! The collection includes the large-scale panel pictured above to make stuffed dolls.

Well we just have to look at Party Dress again, right? These pictures below give you a better idea of the scale.

And below is Bungalow by Hayley Sayles. I didn’t realize when I saw it that I know Hayley! She lives outside of Austin and ran the very awesome but sadly departed Craft-o-Rama. (Hayley is now teaching classes through Leslie Bonnell’s Stitch Lab, which is currently moving to larger digs. Hooray!) I’m loving the retro tiki vibe.

There is much more in the Flickr set, including some cute basics, colorful nursery prints, a Redwork-inspired collection, and a Civil War-era reproduction line called Gettysburg Remembrance. I thought the latter was remarkable because it includes a modern photorealistic collage of Civil War uniforms alongside the authentic prints. I’m sure this will cause controversy amongst the re-creationist crowd!

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Sheree’s Alchemy

Picture 442Sheree (left) and Jona Giammalva of Fabritopia (right)

I didn’t get a chance to see all the fabric I wanted to see this time around at Quilt Market — so I didn’t even get to scratch the surface of all the new sewing patterns being introduced. I’m glad the one booth I got to visit was Sheree’s Alchemy. Houston-based Sheree recently announced that she is shutting down her online fabric shop in order to focus on designing sewing patterns and ready-made items. And from the looks of it, I don’t doubt this venture will be a success. Sheree has a great eye for design, impeccable sewing skills, and wonderful taste in fabric.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Alexander Henry Part III: Big Black Book

As I discovered last year, Alexander Henry is unique amongst fabric companies, and that’s true not only for their designs, but for their business model and delivery schedule. Kathy of Pink Chalk Fabrics explains it better than I can here.

Here’s a look inside the legendary Big Black Book at the collections and one-off prints you can look forward to in 2010. Since they’re sold on paper first, the duds (they have duds?!) never make it to fabric. So if you’re extra excited about something, it can’t hurt to lobby your favorite retailer to place an order.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Kokka Part III: Nani Iro (with Giveaway!)

naniirobags

Naomi Ito’s newest collection within her Nani Iro brand is called Antique Label. This is Vol. 1, Rose & Poppy. For those of us used to the signature Nani Iro watercolor designs, this is quite a style shift! But this is just a detour into reproductions – 1920s-40s florals to be exact. I gather that there is going to be a new original Nani Iro collection and a new Antique Label collection annually from now on.

The Antique Label fabrics are a lovely, delicate, lightweight, semi-sheer 85% cotton, 15% linen blend. Several free downloadable .pdf patterns are available here. The fabrics are available now, and Matatabi Fabrics is offering a fat quarter pack to one lucky True Up reader this week. See the bottom of this post for details.

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Kokka Part II: Echino

echinosign

Most of Kokka’s booth was dedicated to the new Echino fabrics by Etsuko Furuya. And Etsuko herself was there too! At this market I got to spend some quality time with Kelly, proprietress of Superbuzzy, and she was nice enough to introduce me to her and all the Kokka representatives.

Through a translator we asked her about the new collection, which, like her earlier collections, is printed on a cotton-linen blend. She said she likes this as a base cloth because it has more body for clothing and accessories. This collection is a continuation of her distinct design style but is based on woodland creatures (with some guest stars from the African savanna). We also found out that the Echino fabrics have done better in the U.S. and Australia than they have in Japan.

Here it is, sewn up into bags and pouches …

Fall Quilt Market 2009: Kokka

Again, there is so much to show you from Japanese fabric company Kokka that I’m going to break it up into a few posts: Echino and Nani Iro will get their own. (The Nani Iro post will include a giveaway courtesy Matatabi Japanese Fabric, so stay tuned!)

First up. Being the mother of a young boy, these prints grabbed me immediately. Though I always complain about all boy prints being either vehicle, sport, or tool themed, I wouldn’t mind it so much if they all were as cool as this I wouldn’t mind so much. These fabrics can truly grow with your child, from cradle to … middle school maybe?

And finally, a couple cute character prints.

Along with Love, Amy has just released two new sewing patterns: the Liverpool Tunic (a collared shirt with an A-line bottom in four hem lengths) and the Sweet Harmony Handbag and Tote.
