This was Japanese fabric manufacturer Hokkoh’s first Quilt Market (or at least, their first Fall market), and their presence confirmed to me that the popularity of Japanese fabric in the United States is increasing.

Hokkoh produces higher-end apparel fabrics — mostly cotton lawn, double gauze, and linen-cotton blends. At market they had about a quarter traditional Japanese prints and the rest were contemporary. And all were gorgeous. These pictures don’t do them justice, either — the quality was superb. Like a Japanese version of Liberty.

Their featured collection Asagohan (above), is based on the traditional Japanese breakfast. The fabrics below each came in several colorways.

    Oh how I LOVE Japanese fabrics. The quality and feel of their fabrics are exceptional! They are a bit more expensive but because of the ‘Ahhh’…Zen moment(or rather hours) I have working with them, they are worth it. I like to use the traditional Japanese designs in my quilts but they are nearly impossible to find in the USA. Best sources have been etsy, or http://www.materialgirlquilt.com/. I hope more shops will begin carrying this fabric. It really needs to be seen and touched to appreciate it.

    You are certainly right about Liberty–I would have said the last two non traditional florals were Liberty at work! Will they be hard to find retail?
