Giveaway: Jenna + Jona
Mabel Messenger by Jenna Lou Designs
Jenna Lou Designs has a popular line of original, downloadable .pdf sewing patterns, the newest of which is the Mabel Messenger. Jenna’s blog, Jenna Lou Loves You, is a new love of mine. The patterns are available through her website and Etsy alongside her collection of finished goods. Jenna says she loves color and that her work is inspired by the unique vintage and new fabrics with which she works.
Jona is proprietress of the Arizona-based Fabritopia. Since she opened her shop just over a year ago, she’s become an integral part of the online sewing and crafting community. She shares her business, family, and crafting life through her blog Stop Staring, Start Sewing! and coordinated the “Fabric 2.Faux” gathering at the Spring Quilt Market in Pittsburgh.
Jona, meet Jenna. Jenna, meet Jona. Everyone, meet Jona and Jenna!
I’ve paired these two up for a giveaway to see us all through the weekend. Jenna is giving away three copies of her Mabel Messenger pattern, and Jona is offering a $25 Fabritopia gift certificate. So the grand prize will be the gift certificate + pattern, and two runners-up will receive a pattern.
To play, visit Fabritopia, have a look around, and think about which fabric(s) will make the perfect Mabel Messenger. Come on back here and leave a comment with your selection. (If you win the grand prize, you can use it to buy whatever you wish from the shop, of course.)
Mabel Messenger by Jenna Lou Designs – interior view
A note about the Mabel Messenger: The pattern calls for a heavier home dec weight fabric for either the interior or exterior, ideally both, in addition to heavyweight interfacing. Jenna says quilting weight for both will work, but the bag will be slightly less sturdy overall. Denyse Schmidt’s County Fair, Amy Butler’s Nigella, and Vicki Payne’s For Your Home would all fit the bill.
Good luck, everyone! The contest is open worldwide. I will close it down on Wednesday, July 15, around 8am Central U.S. time and announce the winners here and on Twitter shortly thereafter. Thank you so much, Jenna and Jona!
—
The winners! Random.org picked numbers 33, 81, and 91. So the grand prize goes to Jennifer Ladd and the runners up are Barb and Laura W.. Thank you so much for the entries, everyone — your virtual designs were quite inspired!

AB Passion Vine in Grey, for the main fabric. Thanks for the info about Jenna and Jona.

I really love Amy Butler’s Nigella Passion Vine Brown. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Posted by: Rachel - 07/11/2009 - 131
Love that bag pattern! I’d definitely make it with the Momo Tea Time Pistachio. Thanks!
Posted by: Autumn - 07/11/2009 - 132
Denyse Schmidt’s County Fair is my favorite, but there were so many fabrics that caught my eye, overall. I loved all the birds that are featured in prints. They are wonderful.
Posted by: Christin B - 07/11/2009 - 133
WOW! What a great giveaway!!!
This pattern is so great! I’d probably make it with some Heather Ross fabric I have stashed away
This would be a great bag for school.
Posted by: Jennifer S. - 07/11/2009 - 134
What a great giveaway! I am a big fan of Wonderland by Momo and think Tea Time in Pistachio would look great (paired with a sturdier interior fabric, of course). I actually have already bought the Mabel pattern but would never turn down a JennaLou pattern
. Big fan of both Jona & Jenna; count me in!
Posted by: Toni - 07/12/2009 - 135
I am still in awe for the Amy Butler Nigella line and would start with the vine in the river colorway – can’t help it! This is the first bag I’ve been really jazzed about and I think it’s the great structure – I like the stiffness. Fun giveaway and fun to read everyone’s ideas!
Posted by: Maria - 07/12/2009 - 136
I think I’d use Summer Soiree. I’m sure if I dug through Fabritopia for a while, I’d find about 10 combos I liked. I drool over her fabric on a regular basis!
Posted by: Jules O - 07/12/2009 - 137
Really liking the Vicky Payne Tulip Gold for the exterior & Vicky Payne Chains Ivory for the interior..these would look great on this bag!
Posted by: Angie H. - 07/12/2009 - 138
Wow! What a cute puse. I would use Summer Soiree Nosegay in Black lining it with Summer Soiree Mints Grey. Just lovely. Thanks for letting me entr.

I love the Sweet by Urban Chiks – 16 Bouquet Bubble Gum. It is a lovely fabric.
Thanks a lot!
Posted by: Crystal - 07/12/2009 - 140
I love the Amy Butler Nigella Fabrics – especially the Wood Fern Forest and the Passion Vine Grey. I would then probably add some type of matching either subdued or solid fabric to go with those two. Thanks for offering the contest.
Posted by: Leanne - 07/12/2009 - 141
Thank you so much for this opportunity! I would use Heather Bailey fabrics because I have been eyeing them up for a loooong time but have not sewn with them yet. Perhaps the Pop Garden Pop Daisy Red and Ziz Zag Stripes…or the Sway Teal and Bijoux Tiled Primrose… Or the Anna Marie Horner Good Folks Festival Tangerine and Filigree Sun…or… There are so many awesome fabrics on the site!!
Thank you for the opportunity!
Posted by: Corey - 07/12/2009 - 142
Awesome Giveaway! I am really lovin’ me some Whimsy right now so, I would maybe use a combo of those fabrics–Mezzanine is also awesome as well–maybe I’d go that route…
Posted by: Elizabeth - 07/12/2009 - 143
I think Amy Butler’s Nigella fern series would be lovely on this bag!
Posted by: Sue Goodin - 07/12/2009 - 144
Lantern Bloom Birdcage is the fabric I would pick for my messenger bag, not sure what else I would put with it.
Posted by: Rebecca - 07/12/2009 - 145
I’d go with Bari J’s Full Bloom line – perhaps a combination of fabrics – but Bird Light Pink would definitely have to be one of them!!! Thanks for this giveaway!
Posted by: Terri - 07/12/2009 - 146
Oh, my word – if I won this I’d have no idea what to pick! Fabritopia has some wonderful lines – I absolutely adore the Amy Butler fabrics, and Laura Gunn’s lantern bloom, maybe with a coordinating stripe for the interior -or maybe the stripe on the outside and the bloom for the interior? I love a bag with an interesting interior! Thank you for hosting this!
Posted by: Lauren - 07/12/2009 - 147
So many great fabrics!
I would have to choose Amy Butler Nigella Home Decor, Primrose Nickel as the exterior. I would use a matching yellow for the interior.
Posted by: Aimee - 07/12/2009 - 148
I am in love w/ Paula Prass Summer Soiree…but I also love the County Fair Patchwork, too. Let’s just make loads of them and then decide which is cutest, k?
Posted by: Mindy Jo - 07/12/2009 - 149
After looking at the bag and going through the fabrics I feel if I were to sew this up (which I SO WOULD – it’s an adorable bag!) I’d do the following…
The body I would piece vertically with the main fabric being Pillow and Maxfield Whimsy in Pretty Petals Blue. I would do an off-center stripe using the Large Whimsy Doozie Nite to break up the pattern a bit. I’d fussy cut it so the pattern could be seen.
I’d also do the strap in the same fabric for practical reasons – white fabric seems to get dirty when used as a strap. (Yeah, I’m a mom!)
For the closure I’d break the blue up by using the Tonal Doozie Leaf from this collection.
And for the interior of the bag, I’d have to go with a solid – probably a light lime green color. I don’t care for bags with dark interiors, as it’s sometimes hard to see things.
Oh, and just for fun, I’d use one of the patterned fabrics to line the zippered pocket. Little surprises like that just seem to make for a fun purse!
Thanks so much for this contest. This was so much fun!
Mindy

I just discovered your site, now I need to explore it, and I found you at an opportune time, when there’s a wonderful giveaway! yeah! Suzie purrpage3[at]verizon[dot]net
Posted by: Jamie S. - 07/12/2009 - 154
I have to say I love the bag! I do not sew purses or bags of any kind but of course admire them greatly.
I looked at the fabrics and I had to pick something I would like for myself and consider fall coming up.
So I chose three different fabrics used any way you’d like …
Amy Butler Wood Fern Forest
Amy Butler Full Moon Polka Dot Slate
Vicki Payne For You Home Poppy Aqua
I didn’t even think about the interior but something that pops when you open the bag. I’ve always admired that someone thought of how the inside would look as much as the outside of bags.
Hope you like and consider.
Thanks for the opportunity to win!!
Posted by: jodi @ back40life - 07/12/2009 - 155
I would be tempted to start off with Pillow and Maxfield Whimsy DC4029 Curly Swirl Pink and then pick several other fabrics from that line to coordinate…so many pretty patterns!
thanks

WOW, I found two great sites by visiting Jenna Lou’s (great too). Awesome, I have to sign up for the RSS feed. Don’t want to miss out on anything! As for the fabric, that is so very hard to choose. I like
Amy Butler’s Nigella Home but also Vicki Payne’s For You Home. Too hard to narrow it down to one, guess I will have to choose both. Now I need the pattern to go with the fabric. Awesome Giveaway, Hope I win.

I would used Nosegay in Black (gorgeous black and bright pink and green) with the Chevron stripe in black (so BOLD, but basic) with Leaf Party Animal, with Pink Houndstooth on the inside.
