HAND/EYE Magazine is “an independent, international publication which explores the nexus between design and development, culture and commerce, art and craft, and environment and ethics.” Its debut issue’s theme is Africa, and it contains many articles on African textiles. I’ve been trying to learn all I can about African fabrics for an upcoming series, so this comes at just the right time. The articles include:

vlisco

Vlisco, the “Rolls Royce of apparel textiles” in Africa

Mielie-atlast

miele

Cape Town, South Africa’s Miele Studios, which transforms scraps from the textile industry into amazing bags and home furnishings. You can bet their blog went straight into my must-read file. (article link)

Kenyan Threads | HandEye

Suno New York, fashion label that bases their designs on East African kangas (article link)

Also well worth reading are this article on Central African kuba cloth, a series on indigo dyeing, and this article on Moroso’s M’Afrique furnishings collection.

HAND/EYE Editor and founder Keith Recker also has a blog.

Oh! Thanks for all of this. I am currently living in Central Africa and the fabric is just amazing. I’m very curious to here/read about the regional differences.
