Spring Quilt Market 2013: Newcastle

Sonnet

Longtime fabric designer Hoodie Crescent recently took the role of art director at Newcastle Fabrics and her influence really shows. She shared her market photos with me for this post — thanks very much, Hoodie!

Maybe the biggest news is that designer/author/Quiltcon Best-in-Show winner Victoria Findlay Wolfe  will make her debut as a fabric designer with Newcastle. The collection is called Sonnet and it’ll be out later this summer. At its centerpiece is a beautiful floral border print.

Julia’s Notes would fit in well with the painterly work of many of the Rowan designers. The designer Peggy Brown describes the inspiration for the collection:

Inspired in my heart’s pursuit of faith and encouraged by my Grandma Julia’s life, this line of fabric designs celebrates things she loved – and that I love: faith, the beauty of creation – birds, flowers, food (dill seeds), color and life!

Julia started nurses’ training during the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 in Portland, Oregon. Caring for people was an expression of her life of faith. One of the notes in this collection is the announcement of my brother David’s birth written on a post card to her sister Pearl in Sweet Home, Oregon. The other note, tucked between flowers, leaves and birds is written to her, at age 11, for giving the most offering in her Sunday School class in 1908.

Wishes, also from the Newcastle Studio, was reason to celebrate Christmas in May in the Newcastle booth.
