Fall Quilt Market 2012 Intro – Sam Hunter

Hello there!

I’m Sam from Hunter’s Design Studio and, lucky me, I got to help out with the huge project of documenting all that fabric at Quilt Market for Kim!

{ That’s Kim on the left and me on the right! }

A little about me… I’ve been sewing since I was 7, and made my first quilt in 1986. I got really into quilting in the early 1990′s, and even got a quilt into Paducah in 1996. 2002 saw me going back to school to get the art degree I always dreamed of having, finally culminating in a Master of Fine Arts in Intermedia/Fiber in 2010. You can see images of the fine art side of my world here.

At the beginning of this year I launched a quilt pattern design company, and I’m having a blast teaching and testing new pattern ideas. I like designing quilts that are far easier to make then they look – I like the visual complexity, but I want to simplify the construction so that our newest converts can make some pretty things with confidence.

Color-wise, I’m into the bright stuff, and my fave color is ORANGE – shout out to Tangerine Tango, the 2012 color of the year! I really like working with batiks, and have enjoyed  the resurgence of the retro-inspired prints and colorways of recent years.  The orange/teal/gray combos really inspire me. If I have a least favorite color it’s probably pink. Some cherished sections of my stash include fabric with lettering/text/cartoons, and a growing collection of robots. I’m also loving the great collections of solids coming from many of the fabric houses.

This was my first time at Quilt Market, and it was such a great experience. Quilt people are some of the sweetest, kindest people, and the crowd there was no exception. It was fun to see fave products and people, and wonderful to see all the new ideas coming our way. The event is mind-blowingly huge, and I’m happy I had a few days to work my way through it at a pace that both my feet and brain could just about manage. I’m looking forward to organizing it all a little more over the coming weeks and sharing it with you here.
