Giveaway: Automatic Patterns Class on

If you have tried designing patterns in Adobe Illustrator version CS5 or earlier, you know that it is a powerful tool, but creating repeats with it is not the most intuitive or elegant process. The new version, Illustrator CS6, has a Pattern Mode that makes the process much easier, but it has some limitations that folks accustomed to the traditional pattern fill swatch method will miss.‘s resident Illustrator guru Laura Coyle has come up with a genius way to edit patterns and watch them automatically update, without having to create separate fill swatches for testing. Imagine — no more design/drag/draw big box/fill box/note flaws/fix blindly hoping the edits work/repeat! She teaches you this method in her new class Automatic Patterns (video preview above). It’s a web-based, self-paced, 90-minute workshop. The 11 video lessons will guide you through the setup of two pattern creation template files for a basic square repeat and half-drop repeat. It also includes four free pattern template files already filled with artwork to get you up and running right away. The lessons demonstrate how to customize and extend the templates for your own use. You’ll also learn how to prepare and export patterns for ordering yardage at Spoonflower or for creating digital patterns for web backgrounds, scrapbooking, portfolios, and so on.

{ Automatic Patterns includes instructions on how to export your patterns to apply to different surfaces or display in your portfolio. }

This class does *not* cover CS6′s new Pattern Mode, but know that the method is still invaluable even if you’ve already upgraded — it’s all compatible with the new version and complements the functionality of Pattern Mode. And also, you don’t need to be familiar with the traditional method of repeat pattern creation in Illustrator, but the class is intended for people with a good grounding in the program. If you don’t have that, hey, has classes for that too — Laura Coyle’s Illustrator Essentials series.

Automatic Patterns is an absolute bargain at $25, but you can have it at the even-more-bargain rate of FREE by leaving a comment on this post. Just let us know “How would winning a seat in Automatic Patterns help you in your Illustrator work?” I’ll draw a winner this Saturday, August 31, 2012 at about 9am Central U.S. time. Good luck, and be sure to show us what you make in the forum!
