I hadn’t been to Joann Fabrics for a long, long time, but I stopped by this weekend to see what DS Quilts fabrics they might still have. Not much, it turns out, but I did discover the April Johnston fashion fabric collection, which has been out since last fall so I’ve really been under a rock. April was on season 8 of Project Runway and returned for the All-Star season this year too. She’s one of the youngest designers ever to have been on the show, and was known for her edgy, goth-pretty style, and her ability to roll her eyes and shrug off all the cattiness and drama. These fabrics are a big departure for Joann’s and I’m glad to see it. Not only are the designs really cool, but the diversity of textiles was mind-boggling: organzas, taffetas, knits, ombres, solids, novelties, cottons, linen blends, shantung, rayons, spandex, charmeuse, and more. A lot of it is synthetic, but very wearable (and affordable). I haven’t seen much in the way of samples or inspirational photos, which is a pity — people especially need this kind of guidance with fashion fabrics — but I’m still impressed.
The online store still has a few fabrics from last fall’s collection, and several of the spring fabrics, but you’ll probably find more in your local store. It’s definitely worth the trip to see these in person. See all of the spring collection, Tattered Tea Party, here.
