Adobe Illustrator CS6: Pattern Creation Tool

Exciting news for designers: Adobe Illustrator CS6 will feature a pattern creation tool! You can see it at work in the video above. We don’t know how robust it will be, but from the sound of the rumor forums it sounds like you’ll have repeat options beyond the simple square/block repeat you see demonstrated in the video. Even if it’s just square repeats, this too is certainly miles ahead of the rather tedious way they have to be set up in versions CS5 and below.

We also don’t know when Adobe CS6 will be released, but 5.5 is just out and a public beta of Photoshop CS6 has just been released, so it can’t be too long.

Thanks to Anneline in the Fabric Design Forum for bringing it to my attention!

That’s huge–not just for fabric design too. This alone would make me want to upgrade.

  2. Cool! but I thought they were making a pattern drafting feature available, e.g. for garments. This is more targeted to fabric designer or anyone who designs patterns in a wider sense. Oh well…you can’t have it all

Wow, that is so cool. I was just about to get CS5 after having taken a course in how to use Illustrator at the Fashion and Textile Museum here in London. That feature will really make pattern repeats easier. Thank you so much for pointing it out.
