Spring Quilt Market 2011: Yara African Fabrics
Yara‘s traditional African fabrics really stood out from the crowd at Quilt Market. Although not traditional quilting fabric, many of these 100% cotton fabrics could be used to make really interesting and different quilts. Yara has a website, but all orders must be placed over the phone. Luckily, the owners are super friendly and will be happy to help you.
If you live near New York City, you can visit Yara African Fabrics in person at their store in Harlem, located at 2 West 125th Street.

Thank you for this post! I have been collecting African textiles for a couple years and saving them for use in a quilt. My sister, Gloria, travels back and forth from Ghana each year and she usually brings me several meters of fabric. This resource is worth knowing about because it will allow me to expand my collection!

Hi Collette- I don’t remember whether I felt the mudcloth fabric, but in general the fabrics had a slightly stiffer feel and a lower threadcount than designer quilting cottons. Perhaps Yara would send you a sample?
