Meet the Sponsors/Giveaway: Selkie’s Stash

Because I wrote some fightin’ words against Australia yesterday, here’s a Meet the Sponsors interview and giveaway JUST for my friends down under. (Is using that Northern-hemisphere-centric cliché worse than saying the U.S. is just as awesome in the hand-screenprinted fabric department?)

Selkie’s Stash owner Melinda Smith is offering a a $20 gift voucher to a True Up reader — just visit the shop and let us know your favorite (favourite, that is) fabric on the website. And her site makes it easy to find your favoUrites — I really like her tagging system (see the left sidebar under “Collection Tags” as you look around) — I love being able to jump between designers, colors, motifs, etc. with just one click.

Australian entrants only for the giveaway, please! I will draw a winner randomly next Wednesday, June 29, around noon (U.S. Central Time).

{ The Lovely Miss Melinda }

Where do you live? What is the textile/crafty scene like there?

I live in the Blue Mountains, near Sydney, Australia, it is a craft haven, a big area for tourism, people from Sydney come up on the weekends for a quick getaway.

How and when did you start selling fabric?

I have been selling fabric to my fellow crafting friends for over 18 months, I also had customers who asked me to start selling my fabric as they like the fabrics I had in stock for my bag business, so I thought i’d give it a shot.

How did you come up with your name?

My other business making fabric satchels and bags is called Selkie Smith Design. Naturally as the fabric business started from me selling my own personal stash, it seemed fitting to call it Selkie’s Stash.

What surprised you most about the business?

No real surprises yet, maybe as its all new to me :)

How would you characterize your shop?

Contemporary vibrant fabrics and patterns at prices affordable to craft businesses and home sewers. Especially bag patterns that I’d like to make myself if only I had the time!

What are your hot sellers right now?

Riley Blake/The Quilted Fish’s Sugar and Spice fabrics, Michael Miller’s Happy Hills.

Are you online only, or do you have a brick & mortar shop? If you don’t have one, are you planning to open one?

Online only, but I would love to one day open a B&M store that housed both Selkie’s Stash and Selkie Smith Design.

Do you run the shop alone or do you have help?

Yes I run the shop alone, but I have an assistant for my bag making business.

How do you deal with the challenges of the current economy, and increasing competition in the retail fabric business?

Well at the moment I don’t think I could run the fabric business in this current global economic climate (can you tell my previous career was in global banking/futures trading ; )) without my bag business, they are really complementary to each other.

What are the biggest rewards so far of being a fabric merchant?

Rewards are seeing what people make with the fabrics they buy from me. People are so creative, I love seeing their pattern and colour matching, they may do something that wouldn’t come naturally to me and then inspires me in my own crafting.

What’s your personal stash like?

Huge, I love so many fabrics, I like quirky prints, I tend to sway towards Michael MIller, Robert Kaufman, and Riley Blake’s designs, they are so vibrant, even for the florals. I like fabric to pop!

Who are your favorite fabric designers, from the past and/or from the present?

Ann Kelle, Doohikey Designs, Patty Young, Lizzy House, Saffron Craig, I could go on …

Thanks so much, Melinda!
