Fabric Fives: Nancy Zieman

Nancy Zieman is my sewing hero, and I bet that most of you feel the same way! I’ve been watching her show Sewing With Nancy ever since I’ve been able to sew. (In tracking down that link, I discovered you can watch SWN episodes online for free — hooray!). She has a new book out, Sewing A to Z. In it, she compiles sewing tips and techniques that she has “tweaked and personalized” over her 35+ years of sewing expertise, and put them in convenient alphabetical order. The format makes it a book that’s great for browsing as well as to have on hand while you work.

I was thrilled to be asked to host a stop on Nancy’s blog tour, and even more thrilled that she agreed to participate in Fabric Fives. So, take it away, Nancy!

Five Favorite Fabrics in Your Stash Right Now

Landscape quilting is my favorite pasttime! This fabric collection includes four leaf prints that are out of print, and a hand dyed fabric from Wendy Richardson.

Five Fabrics on Your Wish List

Amy Butler — Delhi Blooms Corduroy in Grass

Amy Butler – Solid Corduroy in Lime (image from Hawthorne Threads)

Anna Maria Horner Laminated Fabric (to make a great tote)

Hand-dyed fabric by Laura Wasilowski, Moss green

A blue hand-dyed fabric from Friestyle (ed. note: not shown in image above)

Five Fabrics You Could (or Do) Consume by the Bolt

Not exciting, but totally crucial! In my sewing studio, we literally consume these fabrics by the bolt. From bags to garments to quilt projects, we’re always using stabilizers and interfacings.

Five Most Recent Acquisitions (and your plans for them, if any)

This collection (various supplies) is currently being made into a new product that will launch at the fall ’12 (yes, 2012) Quilt Market! Sorry, can’t disclose just yet!

A Favorite Five Fabric Combo

I love greens and blues. This combo is soothing to look at! (Magnolia Lane by Laura Gunn, Dimples from Andover)

Thanks so much, Nancy!

Thanks for the insight into what Nancy is into :) I’m not exactly sure what the five bolts are for. Maybe I’ll have to get the book.

  2. It’s always fun to see what other crafters are using.

Thanks for the interview with Nancy Z. Hope win a copy of her book – as miss her shows on PBS since our local station eliminated all quilting and painting programs. Thanks for the insight.

    Kim,
I am honored that I’m your “sewing hero!” You made my day. Just returning from a day at the TV studio, I don’t feel like anyone’s hero.

Thanks for mentioning that Sewing WIth Nancy is available online. Yes, the most current 52 shows can be seen at http://www.nancyzieaman.com I hope that your readers will enjoy.

Thanks for being part of the blog tour and for your kind words.

I also love Nancy, and blues and greens with brown and I love the combo that will come out in ’12, with the black/white/orange etc. I would make table runners and wall hangings out of the blues and greens, and for the black and white combo, I would make a tote bag, thoses would be beautiful since my livingroom is blues, greens and brown. would match beautiful….thanks

Maybe something is wrong with my browser but I didn’t see a comment option on Nancy’s site. Sadness. I really wanted to join the giveaway. Sewing supplies can get expensive, currently going to school for fashion design. It’s nice to hear Nancy’s insights and sewing with stabalizers especially on slippery fabric is a life saver. Love the blue green combo of color myself, its peaceful looking. Nice post!
