Blog Tour/Giveaway: Hillary Lang & Wee Wonderfuls

Today we’re thrilled to feature Hillary Lang‘s new book, Wee Wonderfuls: 24 Dolls to Sew and Love as part of the blog tour organized by Hillary and her publisher STC Craft.

I don’t think you can find group of bigger vintage fabric freaks than Hillary, me, and Kim Steckler (who wrote the book review today). In 2005, Hillary and I found ourselves uploading vintage fabric swatches to Flickr at the same time, which led to us to forming the Vintage Fabric Flickr Pool. Five years later, it has 2,600+ members and nearly 13,000 fabric images. And today Kim S. is one of its most prolific contributors, with nearly 1,000 fabrics added (heh — she just surpassed it as I was writing this)! I don’t think there’s a more inspiring design resource anywhere else on the internet.

Hillary is not only gifted with a rich imagination full of delightful characters and creatures, but the ability to bring them to life with a great combination of textiles, in which vintage fabric plays a big part. So for her stop on the blog tour today, Hillary is giving away the fat quarter bundle of vintage fabrics from her stash (see above). To enter, just leave a comment on this post telling us why you love vintage fabric, and we’ll draw a winner next Friday, October 7, around noon Central U.S. time. Thanks so much, Hillary!

For a chance to win the STC Craft book of your choice, hop on over to the STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books blog and tell them about your favorite childhood doll.

  1. Marcia W. says:

I love vintage fabric because it reminds me of times past. Some of my quilts are this way – where look at different fabrics and talk about whose they were and when. Vintage fabric just has a “character” – the fabric was modern/contemporary when it was made and reflects history. Thanks for this giveaway.

  2. Allison says:

Vintage fabric seems more valuable to me because it is often no longer available – which makes me terrified to use it! It also has a wonderful mystery and fagility about it. It really is an honor to work with.

  3. Miss Mary says:

I have a large (but not huge) stash of vintage fabric and have been waiting for Hilary’s book to come out! I am also excited by your give-away!

  4. Liz M. says:

I love vintage fabric!!! It’s rare, it can be cheap, you have to hunt for it, it has a mysterious history, and you almost never find duplicates (and when you do, it’s exciting–I had to pause the TV once because I suspected the mom from That 70s Show was wearing a dress made out of the same fabric as some I had, and I was right!). As much as I love the designer fabric that’s out now, I get sick of seeing the same prints all the time.

  5. Nicole Lou says:

Vintage has such pretty color and patterns. Soft and loved. It make me happy just to stare at stacks of fabric arranged by color or style, even if I never decide what to make with it!

  6. Nicole Lamb says:

I love using vintage fabric that I might have seen in my Grandma’s house. I have come across a few sheets at thrift stores that were the same as the sheets I used to sleep on at Grandma’s house. It’s so fun to see them come back into style!

  7. Heidi says:

Vintage fabric reminds me of sewing with my grandma as a little girl. It’s funny to me how many of the prints have stayed in my head in exquisite detail after all these years.

  8. colleen says:

I love vintage fabrics because they have a history to them that makes them sort of mysterious. I also love that the patterns are unique compared to what’s on the commercial market and what’s even more fun is stumbling onto something that I can recall from my childhood!

  9. Amber says:

Because they’re different than others! Some of them are made with dyes or processes or whatever that aren’t being done anymore because of new technology. And with colors and patterns that don’t really quite happen again. Retro style brings lots back, but there are still qualitative differences with older fabrics.

  10. They’ve got the best colors & patterns.

  11. Jen J says:

I’m so excited by your giveaway! I have a small vintage fabric stash and some reproduction fabrics. I love vintage fabrics for the designs – you just can’t get fabric like that anymore!

  12. Anita says:

I don’t know why I love vintage fabric, but the truth is I can walk right past contemporary fabric (even most of the reproductions) without reaching into my wallet, but put a piece of vintage fabric in front of me and it’s like trying to resist candy. I have a huge collection of vintage fabric and only a modest stash of new stuff left over from making quilts for my grandchildren.

  13. gina says:

I Love vintage fabrics because I think the designs have something more than what we see today. I love new fabric too. It’s just maybe it’s what they felt in those rough times like when feedsacks were created that draws us to them. As if they had so very little, but what they did have the poured all there joy, fun and hope into and that’s what I love. And maybe I just love them because they’re hard to find…a treasure hunt.

  14. DivaJean says:

I am a vintage fabric fan because I love to fashion American Girl doll clothes, specific to the historical dolls.

  15. thepricklypinecone says:

I adore vintage fabric because it is often a lot more vivid and fun than fabric right now. It also fits in well with our kitsch interior!

  16. Jeneen C says:

Vintage fabric has wonderful colors, designs and the feel is soft from all those years of washing

  17. Heather says:

I love vintage fabric because of the interesting colors and patterns that I can’t find in modern fabric. There is also something exciting about finding a vintage fabric that you love! It’s unique and like finding a little treasure.

  18. Lorajean says:

Vintage fabrics are full of joy and quirkiness. I love vintage fabrics because they are full of history and are a great addition to modern fabrics. They add that element of past to present and future to create a perfect timelessness.

  19. Honey says:

I love vintage fabrics as when ever I touch one…especially if it came from something that hadl been made to wear with it…I feel and sense my great grandmother and the comfort and scent of freshly toasted flour and spices bring. She had all these really great aprons. I hope to one day FINALLY win some vintage aprons or fabric to make my own as I find them at estate sales but there’s always some old lady that beats me. I swear…It must give them all some kind of sick glee. Where are all those older ladies that have to watch their pennies?! Does it make me a bad person that I want to kick their walkers or does it make me a good person that I don’t?

Side note: Where do you find your vintage fabrics? What’s a great place to go? :) Is anyone making any ‘reproductions’ for those of us that aren’t able to take out bid the older ladies?

  20. Holly says:

I like that vintage fabric has “history”. I like to think about who selected, purchased and cut the fabric. I especially love sewing with them…it feels like the piece of fabric is FINALLY getting to serve it’s purpose.

  21. WandaFish says:

Vintage fabrics bring back memories of a handmade childhood – beautiful dresses created from cut down ladies clothes bought from jumble sales! The fabrics are a connection with the designs and crafters of the past :)

  22. Rachellee says:

I love vintage fabric because of the beautiful color combinations and the unique [atterns. And I love that it is a little bit of history…

  23. Jennifer says:

Vintage fabrics are the best they remind of Little House On The Prairie I was born in the wrong era.

  24. Karen says:

Vintage fabric has a charm that just can’t be replicated… it’s familiar and innocent, and unassuming.

  25. maggie smith says:

my mom sewed a lot of dressed for me in the late 60′s and 70′s, but sadly we had a huge house fire when i was 12 and none of my old clothes survived. i would so love to see those dresses again!
but thank god for ebay because i have stumbled across some of those cotton prints and been able to buy them and have them again – it’s an amazing feeling.
