Blog Tour/Giveaway: Hillary Lang & Wee Wonderfuls

Today we’re thrilled to feature Hillary Lang‘s new book, Wee Wonderfuls: 24 Dolls to Sew and Love as part of the blog tour organized by Hillary and her publisher STC Craft.

I don’t think you can find group of bigger vintage fabric freaks than Hillary, me, and Kim Steckler (who wrote the book review today). In 2005, Hillary and I found ourselves uploading vintage fabric swatches to Flickr at the same time, which led to us to forming the Vintage Fabric Flickr Pool. Five years later, it has 2,600+ members and nearly 13,000 fabric images. And today Kim S. is one of its most prolific contributors, with nearly 1,000 fabrics added (heh — she just surpassed it as I was writing this)! I don’t think there’s a more inspiring design resource anywhere else on the internet.

Hillary is not only gifted with a rich imagination full of delightful characters and creatures, but the ability to bring them to life with a great combination of textiles, in which vintage fabric plays a big part. So for her stop on the blog tour today, Hillary is giving away the fat quarter bundle of vintage fabrics from her stash (see above). To enter, just leave a comment on this post telling us why you love vintage fabric, and we’ll draw a winner next Friday, October 7, around noon Central U.S. time. Thanks so much, Hillary!

For a chance to win the STC Craft book of your choice, hop on over to the STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books blog and tell them about your favorite childhood doll.

  1. Rae says:

Oh please let me win… I love vintage fabrics and Wee Wonderfuls!

  2. Rosa in The Antipodes says:

I love vintage fabrics because they always bring some sort of history with them. If I don’t know much about them I always can make up something interesting…hahaha! It’s always fun with them anyway. I just found out about this blog and it is one of my favorites already!

  3. Melissa says:

To me there is nothing better in sewing than finding a great vintage fabric and bringing it to life again!!!

  4. Patty says:

The fabrics are beautiful. They remind me of my grandma and the quilts she made.

  5. Karen says:

Vintage! My childhood brought back to me in the 21st century. Love these fabrics. :o )

  6. Miraya says:

I love vintage fabric because its the true mark of a generation –of an era. It takes you back to the history of how that time period was, what the styles were and they help to really tell a story. Some time periods had fabrics that were rich in patterns, bold in colors or textures. Others had soft lace and gentle hues as the stamp and reflection of its time. I love that each one is different and each one is unique and that’s what makes them really special to me.

  7. Bellgirl says:

What a gorgeous pile of fabrics! I have just started using vintage linens, and I’m going to check out the Flickr group! bellgirlsblog [at] gmail [dot] com

  8. Lisa P. says:

I love it because of the cool styles you can find that are different from a lot of what you see today, but also because the fabric has its own story, even if you don’t know what it is.

  9. SewLindaAnn says:

I love vintage fabrics for the same reason I love vintage things like bowls, etc. There’s a story, a history behind it that makes it special. Sometimes you find notes, or receipts with dates and you can know a little, but usually you don’t and that’s okay. The character shines through and is loved by being made into something.

  10. Jennifer says:

Just today I discovered a yard of fabric my mom had purchased in 1974 to sew a sunsuit for my older sister. It was covered in the sweetest little hearts and lace pattern. I put it back in my mom’s sewing box, although I wanted to swipe it right then and there. She got lucky this time!

  11. Margie says:

I just love vintage fabric … the feel, the patterns, the texture.

  12. Marilou says:

Vintage fabrics capture the essence of their era, and never cease to happily surprise with their unique patterns and colours!

  13. Myssie says:

Oh, vintage fabric! I really appreciate that the fabric has been loved before.

  14. kelli says:

I love fabric that has a story!

  15. Lindsay Ramon says:

Vintage fabrics are so nostalgic! They bring back great memories of going through dress-up clothes at my aunt’s house or different items from the kitchen I remember from my childhood. Thanks for the giveaway!

  16. Christina says:

The colors, the designs, the memories, the inspiration! I hope something brings such good memories to my children as vintage fabric does to me of my childhood and my mother.

  17. ainhoa says:

I love vintage fabrics. They remind me of my childhood. Thanks for the giveaway.

  18. Gill says:

Vintage fabrics are such amazing colours and of course they have a history which I love

  19. Kay says:

I love vintage fabrics, furniture, photos, all of it really. They always make me think of my grandma’s house, lovely hairstyles and days in the country.

  20. Sarah says:

I love the history of vintage cuts of fabric — what was cooked when this bit was part of an apron? How many heads rested on this when it was a pillowcase?

  21. Krista says:

Love the feel of a good feedsack. Love the texture of a good chenille. Love the romance of a thrifted floral bed linen. Love the sweetness of a 1930′s juvenile print.

  22. JoAnna says:

My mom has been making aprons from vintage patterns. It is always so hard to find the right fabrics to go with the patterns. Vintage fabrics work best!

  23. tricotaria says:

I love your work, your site and vintage fabrics too: They are simply amazing! They are so valuable!

  24. Stef says:

Tripping down memory lane! The 60s throwbacks give me childhood flashbacks.

  25. Lee Ann Bailey says:

Vintage fabrics are so much fun for so little money. Don’t misunderstand–I know you can spend a fortune on vintage fabrics very easily–but for the most part the fabrics I love the most cost the least. Sometimes the fabric is in a garment where I have to take it apart, soak it, darn or mend it, but isn’t that part of the fun?

  26. Paula L. says:

I love vintage because it reminds me of my childhood and of my grandmother’s house. Hillary makes amazing toys; I have her book and I want to try and make all her toys, they’re so cute! Thank you for the giveaway!

  27. Many years ago, too many to remember, a girlfriend gave me a vintage monogrammed linen bedspread. I fell in love with it then and there and have held a fascination for vintage ever since!

  28. Jenny G. says:

I love the colors and patterns of vintage fabric. It’s always nice to have a piece of fabric that sets your designs apart for other’s work, because so often, if you use popular collections of fabric all of the time, it can all start to look a little bit similar.

  29. Anne says:

I love the connection to our history. I have a stash of old clothes that my mother wore that I am using here and there in different projects. I love knowing that it was loved so long ago and will be loved again!

  30. Rebecca says:

I love vintage fabric because it so often blends surprisingly well with my loves in new fabric design. It shows that we never change that much over time, even when life feels utterly precarious.

  31. Brenda says:

Love love love Vintage fabrics, the colors, the prints, everything about them!!

  32. Valerie says:

I’m addicted to handmade history, and have long lusted after my grandmothers’ quilts. More recently, I do believe it was Hillary who reminded me to always be on the search for vintage fabrics.

  33. gina f. says:

i love vintage fabric for its colors and patterns and they can take you back to childhood days

  34. Amanda says:

I love thinking about the history of fabric, and I love how vintage fabrics capture so much of the spirit of the times when they were made.

  35. Alissa says:

Vintage fabric always leaves me thinking…what did someone in that time make with this-an apron? a skirt? there is a history to it-perhaps someone had the perfect project in mind for it-but for some reason didn’t get around to it-or if it’s just scraps of vintage fabric -they did get around to it and made something wonderful for their home-you can kind of make up stories for the fabric!

  36. Ammie says:

I love reading Hilary’s story about her fabric stash and how it shaped her involvement with sewing toys. Personally, I love that vintage fabric is beautiful, unique, and green green green. :D

  37. Julee says:

Vintage fabrics have a story to tell. They open up a world of possibilities–making a drab pattern fabulous–helping us to reinvent ourselves and our world. From one fabric addict, to another…A little can go a long way in adding a touch of magic.

  38. Laura W. says:

I love vintage fabrics because it’s a help to the environment to reuse fabrics, and also because they’re so pretty. I love the idea of using fabrics from my mom’s teen years for a sewing project in 2010.

  39. Erin says:

I love vintage fabric because it’s “preloved.” I also like reusing items when possible… and vintage fabrics tend to be cheaper and have more character!

  40. Paula says:

I love vintage fabrics because they are so cheerful! I lean towards bright colours of the 30s or 70s and the prints are so fun! Thank you for the giveaway!

  41. Lucie says:

Vintage fabric takes you back. It’s like having your own history tour. We love it :)

  42. Brittany says:

i’m new here and i would just love love love to be able to use those vintage fabrics. xoxo

  43. caro says:

HI, I just love vintage fabrics, the repro ones are cute but don’t quite match the colour and quality of the original. I love to use them and am always sure the results will be unique!

  44. Jennifer says:

Vintage fabrics have such cool patterns! They also make whatever pattern you use that more original… Thanks for the opportunity :O)

  45. Angelina says:

I love the colors in vintage fabrics. I like to throw a vintage scrap into quilt blocks. It makes the quilt a little more unique than when you use all new fabrics, imo.

Thanks for the chance to win some beautiful fabric!

  46. Rachel P says:

I love to see patterns and designs of the past. Reminds me of my Grandma’s

  47. Rita says:

    why not love vintage fabric?

  48. Paula says:

Ohhhh, let me win, love ALL vintage, specially *fabrics*, these are gorgeous!=)

  49. Jessica says:

I love vintage fabric because it is nostalgic. Reminds me of spending the night at my grandparents’ house when I was a kid. Sweet, simple.

  50. Allison says:

I just love the history behind vintage fabrics–knowing people were wearing dresses and clothes made of them–using them as linens, etc. It’s neat to use them to continue that history on!
