New Indie Fabric Shop in Austin, TX

commonthread

This weekend, I got to go to an opening reception for Austin’s newest independent fabric shop, The Common Thread. It’s primarily an apparel fabric shop, with lots of natural fibers and organic offerings. She has at least one Liberty print, a couple Echino linen blends, oilcloth, baby-leaning fabrics like Minkee and flannel (because Austin Baby is next door), silks, linens, cotton wovens and knits, denim, knits, lace, sheers, solids, prints … you name it. There’s also a small selection of ribbons, trim, and notions; books are on the way. The shop is airy and inviting, and owner Jeanie is super. Her enthusiasm for supporting other local small businesses and the local sewing community is inspiring.

The shop just had its “quiet opening” yesterday, so stop by! It’s located one block south of Barton Springs Road at 701-E South Lamar Blvd. Hours are 10am-6pm Tuesday-Saturday and 10am-5pm Sunday. Phone # is (512) 445-7270. Congratulations Jeanie!

I’d been planning on stopping by for their soft opening but didn’t make it. Will obviously have to – excited to see another shop in town!

My friend Antoinette, who lives in Austin (& writes http://www.clevergirl.org) just emailed me about how cool this place is–it sounds like Austin’s rapidly catching up with Portland in the cool fabric store category!

  3. Why oh why aren’t there wonderful shops like this where I live? It makes me sad.

Thanks for the intro! If I’m ever in Austin I’ll know where to go.

On Saturday my hubby and I took a ride and checked out the store. She has beautiful, great quality fabrics! I recommend checking her out. She is very personable and easy to talk to and her honesty was evident.

    Great shop to promote!
