Spring Quilt Market 2009: Lecien

This post is part of a series reporting on the Spring 2009 International Quilt Market by True Up East Coast Stringer Mary Beth of Supafine.

Shall we continue the “adorable Japanese fabric” theme? Yes? All right, here’s Lecien.

Lecien has five new collections coming out. The first is Durham, showcasing romantic florals in soft colors, pale pinks, light blues. Very sweet and faded-looking, like an antique quilt.

The second is Floral Collection, pastels in sage green, pink, and cream, with tiny scale prints as well as larger scale ones. The inspiration for this was “a floral garden in the spring,” according to Masateru Watanabe, of Lecien’s planning department.

After that comes Flower Sugar, which is sweet-cute in similar flower prints but in a brighter palette. There are some great border prints in this collection, too, plus more graphic dots and gingham. See it in the picture below on the left:

Then comes the real cute: Minny Muu, above right. Very small patterns, suitable for kids: trucks, bears, dots, chickens. And here in my unreadable shorthand I have the word “frmch.” You heard it here first, friends. I don’t know what it means, but we break the news here at True Up.

Lastly is the wonderfully named Old New collection, featuring reproductions of 19th-century prints.

The palette is deep and tonal; the fabrics are “the same texture of antique fabrics,” according to Watanabe, as well as being easy to cut. I couldn’t speak to that, not having had a chance to stand around cutting into their stuff, but I did get a look at some of the Old New made up into a gorgeous hand-made quilt — I believe the artist is Yoko Saito.

the whole thing is hand-pieced and hand quilted

Hand-pieced and hand quilted. Is that amazing or what?
