Fall Quilt Market 2009: Let the Wrapup Begin
Isn’t it cute how I thought I would be blogging throughout Market? Yeah. I was going going going from 7am till midnight all weekend and then shut the place down yesterday. But I’m back home now and exhausted, and my voice sounds like I’m a chain smoker, but I had a wonderful time seeing friends again and meeting others for the first time, and of course seeing all the fabulous fabrics.
It’s official: there is too much good stuff out there. Only three years ago my kind of fabrics were few and far between and now I couldn’t even hope to document it all. Sure, that’s because I’ve come to appreciate a wider variety of fabrics, but it’s also true that fabric manufacturers are actively seeking to capture this contemporary/retro/hip/younger/whateveryouwanttocallit aesthetic. (The Fabric 2.0 crowd, if I may, Caroline?) Other big trends I saw:
- a wider variety of basecloths for garment sewing, including cotton lawn, voile, and dobby
- gray/neutrals combined with brights
- muted color palettes
- boy-leaning fabric and patterns
- border prints
- even more Japanese fabric, and American manufacturers working with Japanese designers
Posting will still be a little slow today but I’ll be picking up steam throughout the week. Enjoy!

“Boy-leaning fabrics”? I’m guess you don’t mean camouflage. Any examples you can easily point to? I’m curious.
Can’t wait to see pictures
Sounds like so much fun!
So glad to hear there will be more boy-leaning fabrics. I feel like “girly” has taken over a bit and it’s hard to find stuff appropriate for men and boys.
Glad you are home safe and sound even though you are tired.
Can’t wait to see what you saw!
I’ve enjoyed your posts about Market – now I’m off to the Festival myself tomorrow.
I totally agree with the availability of awesome prints nowadays. I used to think about designing my own fabrics, but now I have sort of hung that idea out on a post. There’s so much out there already that I don’t know if I could be original!
