Fall Quilt Market 2009: Anna Maria Horner

I can’t tell you how excited I am about Anna Maria Horner‘s new collections for FreeSpirit: Little Folks cotton voile (which I heard pronounced “voy-ul” more often than not — I hereby decree you can use that or the Frenchier “vwall”), Little Folks flannel, Little Folks dobby dots, and last-but-not-least, Little Folks oilcloth. I’m excited about the prints for their own sake, but the step completely outside of quilting cotton makes this collection kind of groundbreaking.

The dobbies, close-up

Voile is of lighter weight, drapier, and sheer compared to quilting weight cotton, and is ideal for clothing. Though as you can see, you can use it for quilts and accessories too. Little Folks voile consists of 34 fabrics (seven prints divided into three colorways, plus six coordinating solids). And bonus — it’s 55″ wide. The dobby has raised dots, lending a lovely and interesting texture. There are eight gorgeous, saturated mostly-solids with scalloped stripes and a print called “Square Dance” — covering the ottomans in the picture above — that’s in four colorways. Pictures online are not going to do them justice, but trust me — snatch these fabrics up when they come out next month; you won’t regret it.

Little Folks flannel shares the same seven designs with the voile collection, with 16 fabrics in all divided evenly into a warm “Good Morning” palette and a cool “Good Night” palette. Only two prints will be available on oilcloth — the AMH oilcloths sold out almost instantly last time around, so don’t miss out this time, OK?

These fabrics lend themselves so well to baby gear — it’s no surprise that Anna Maria’s second sewing book is all about moms and babies.+ Handmade Beginnings: 24 Sewing Projects to Welcome Baby (Amazon pre-order link!) will have everything from maternity and nursing wear to baby clothes and toys. You’ll have to wait till around May of next year for it. If you started trying now, ladies, you could be seven months pregnant by the time it comes out … just sayin’ …

Anna Maria shows off everything in her booth here, and goes in-depth about LF voile, complete with slideshows and baby Roman, here.

An easy quilt showing off Little Folks voile and the dobby dots. So good.
