Fall Quilt Market 2009: Michael Miller
Let’s start the coverage with Michael Miller. I’ll save the Michael Miller signature designers for another post, but here is the recent and upcoming releases from the Michael Miller studio — most if not all of these are designed by Kathy Miller herself.
Coming soon: gnomes around the world! I can’t remember when these are out. Note the border print, the first of quite a few you’ll see this season, and the doll panel, another thing that I can see making a big comeback.
As I mentioned, one of the big trends I saw this market was experimentation with new base cloths and finishes. Laminates started to come out a couple years ago and they are still very popular. Michael Miller’s new laminates are phthalate- and vinyl-free, so they are safe to use as tablecloths, lunch bags, and anything else involved with food handling.
Above are some cotton lawn prints and solid dobbys. See them sewn up into a cute girl’s outfit here.
I love this group — here it is in a black colorway. The one above is actually brown. I will issue a blanket apology now for the poor convention center lighting + my limited photographic skills …
This is Kathy Miller above showing me the Michael Miller Essentials collection (already available in stores) — it’s their 10th anniversary (congratulations!) and they are re-issuing their most popular prints from their early years. I still have the Retro Rocket Kids in my stash that I bought early this decade. Does that make me old school?
Many of these are reproductions from vintage sources. Kathy told me about some more super exciting vintage source material she’s working with, so I’m eager to see what’s coming down the road.
The girly nostalgiafest of Flower Fairies is back with a new group, Magical Garden Fairies — this time with glitter and a fairy toile.

Are those gnome panels meant to be made into gnome shaped pillows?! That would be awesome.
OMG, I covet those gnomes!
Erin, yes! I think the gnomes would make good pillows or dolls.
Love the lawn basecloths coming out. And of course the gnome border print.
Gnomes are really the “thing” now aren’t they? And all those sort 70′s-ish mushrooms too. Michael Miller fabrics are sooooooooooo amazing.
I’m literally drooling over those first few photos. So much gnome love!
