Fall Quilt Market 2009: Kokka Part II: Echino
Most of Kokka’s booth was dedicated to the new Echino fabrics by Etsuko Furuya. And Etsuko herself was there too! At this market I got to spend some quality time with Kelly, proprietress of Superbuzzy, and she was nice enough to introduce me to her and all the Kokka representatives.
Through a translator we asked her about the new collection, which, like her earlier collections, is printed on a cotton-linen blend. She said she likes this as a base cloth because it has more body for clothing and accessories. This collection is a continuation of her distinct design style but is based on woodland creatures (with some guest stars from the African savanna). We also found out that the Echino fabrics have done better in the U.S. and Australia than they have in Japan.
Here it is, sewn up into bags and pouches …
I WILL be getting that maybe-purple, maybe-brown print with the birds and orange and yellow flowers. Oh, I will.
I love the wreath/medallions — here, let’s get a closer look …
A dress, pillows, and slippers …
Like last year’s Echino collection, this one will also include some oilcloth:
Kelly and I got to take our pictures with the woman, the myth, the legend. Isn’t she awesome? Sorry about the blur.
The new Echino collection will be in the shops very soon, hopefully in time for some holiday gift sewing!

OMG, she looks EXACTLY what I thought she would look like!

Loved the sneak peek and I, too, see that purple-y/brown-y bird print in my future.
XO,
Rhea
How lucky that you got to meet her! I just love her designs!
I love all your posts about quilt market. They are very informative. The trouble is one can’t buy each and every fabric. Can’t wait til Heather Bailey’s fabric comes out. It’s so gorgeous. Love Echino, Art Gallery designs, Yuwa and Phil Jacob’s shell fabric. Thanks for your great blog.
I cannot wait for these – they look so awesome!
My favorite so far. Hands down.
what a deghtfull post! I’m a fan of both superbuzzy and echino.
ahhh! this is fabulous stuff! Thank you for the photos!
What a gorgeous collection! I have really enjoyed reading your quilt market posts over the past few weeks – thank you for reporting on all of the wonderful new design releases. There seems to be an exciting growth in fabric design right now – great to see!
Wait, wait, wait. That was Etsuko Furuya!? I TALKED (sort of–told her her outfit was fabulous) to her! And didn’t know she was MY FAVORITE DESIGNER!
Oh, I love Echino fabrics – thanks for this post, and the opportunity to meet the fabric-line’s “mother”
I really really LOVE echino! Love the last line and this line is fantastic too! Thanks so much for this post. Fabulous!
HOW FABULOUS! I love this post, and it’s fun to see the creator, too!
I love the same maybe-purple, maybe-brown print with the birds and orange and yellow flowers.
oh. my. god.
i am so in love with these colors!
stunned. just stunned.
not sure if i’ll be able to get any sleep tonight thinking about how gorgeous all of this is…
It amazes me how designs so seemingly simple can have so much aesthetic appeal. I must have it all!
