Textile Stew: Eco-Friendly Edition
Fibers from the sometimes-invasive water hyacinth are being developed into sustainable fabric. The plant is sometimes invasive, but it just sounds lovely, doesn’t it?
A new discovery for me, the Fiber Organics shop, also has a blog, and I’ll definitely be spending some time browsing the archives. These posts caught my eye: Zero-waste pattern layout (related: No Waste and Less Waste Fashion Designers), and a breakdown of the differences between the terms eco-friendly, organic, sustainable, etc.
Our own Mary Beth has opened a new shop Supafab, featuring handmade + sustainable gear for tots, adults, and home.
Birch Fabrics‘ Circa 50 line was featured on the L.A. Times Design Blog. Hooray for Cynthia!

Wow…what a great post. Visited Birch Fabrics – will have to order some prints.
Thank you for the mention!
Love the theme of this roundup. I started eyeing some wool-hemp blends over at Fiber Organics.
I’ve always held to the (conspiracy) theory that pattern companies and fabric manufacturers were in collusion to make me spend more money on fabrics than I actually needed for a given pattern. after a few years of sewing and learning I found I can buy less fabric than the pattern package requires. Partly because I learned to lay out pieces with more efficiency and partly because I am only 5’4″!!
Great links here – Thanks!!
