I’m currently on vacation in San Francisco, CA and looking forward to visiting all the textile points-of-interest (any recommendations?). So no posts until late this week. See you then!

    lots of fabric stores in the area; two with a good selection of Japanese imports are Stone Mountain & Daughter and New Pieces in Berkeley. Otherwise they’re mostly the usual quilting cottons… Lacis in Berkeley has lace & trims; Piedmont Fabric in Oakland has interesting trims. If you were 6 weeks later you’d be here for PIQF!

    Yes, there are some great places in SF for textiles.
    The last one, Artfibers is actually a yarn store but a very special one.
    Some stores may have unusual hours, call and check first

    I was out there in June and tried to get to the 2 places below just for fun but they were both closed. It was a Monday, so I kind of expected that.

    Britex is another fabric store, located in Union Square. It might be fun to visit just to say you’ve been there. I hate to say this, but I’ve learned that I’m not so excited about going to fabric stores when I travel anymore. Probably because I feel like it’s all stuff I’ve already seen whether at a local shop or online.

    What I enjoyed the MOST was going to Japantown and shopping at the Ichiban Kan store, http://www.ichibankanusa.com/. I was also able to have a yummy lunch there. Look for the Japanese book store too. They had some really cool “bandana”-sized fabric that can be used for lots and lots of purposes.

    Mendels sounds like a great place but I haven’t been there. Art supplies and fabric! http://www.mendels.com/mendels.html

    That sounds like a great list. I’ve only been to Britex but have heard good things about the Stone Mountain & Daughter store in Berkeley. Dharma Trading (fiber dyes etc) has a brick ‘n mortar store in San Rafael.

    Please, PLEASE, go to Urban Burp. I’ve been dying to go ever since I heard about it. Unfortunately, it will be awhile before I make it to the west coast, so can I please live through you? LOL

    The name alone has me curious, but I’d really like to get the scoop on what its like.

    We’re one of the few fabric compamies located on the west coast, we’re in Berkeley. We’re not open to the public, as of today, but will be on Fridays from Friday the 19th of September.

    If you get to the north bay you might want to check out Ambatalia fabrics (http://www.ambataliafabrics.com/) The founders have recently started collaborating under a new name The Fabric Society to create a resource center for sustainable textiles and innovative design.

    Also, if you want to take a field trip you are welcome to visit the home studio of Harmony Art. We are about 3 hours north of SF off of scenic highway 1.

    Definitely Urban Burp. I haven’t made it to the shop yet, but I spent a LOT of time at her booth at a modernism show last fall (winter? Who can tell the seasons apart in California?). Tons of beautiful mod stuff, particularly barkcloth, in pristine condition.
