Quilt by Irene Williams, born 1920. “Housetop” – “Log Cabin” variation, c.1975 Cotton (even weave, twill, dotted swiss). 89×78 inches.
From the book Gee’s Bend: The Women and Their Quilts, sadly out of print. The description of the quilt reads “Irene Williams made several quilts that contain fabric printed with the word “vote.” Wilcox County [Williams was born in Rehoboth, Alabama, which is in Wilcox County] had been the scene of many of the fiercest voting-rights struggles of the 1960s.”
A close-up, so you can see the great “vote” fabric.
