Retrosaria

japanese fabric from retrosaria

New Japanese prints at Retrosaria

You did know that Rosa Pomar of a ervilha cor de rosa has an online fabric and notions shop, Retrosaria, didn’t you? Thanks to her, I now know that “fabric” in Portuguese is “tecido.” I have to compile a big list of how to say “fabric” in other languages. We all need to be able to ask locals to point us to a shop no matter where we are in the world.

She sells a small handful of gorgeous cottons — many that I haven’t seen anywhere else — also the two sweet ribbons that she designed, amongst other notions. Like me, Rosa is an advocate of African fabrics, particularly the crazy wax prints of Ghana, so look for those as well.

Can I just say? It’s things like this that really make me curse the stupid weak American dollar.

That is a great online shop. I especially love those sweet ribbons she has. Thanks for the tip!

It’s things like this that make me praise you for linking to euro sites that don’t gouge on international shipping like the American ones! :)

    In Spanish fabric is “tela”.
I also love Rosa Pomar’s Ribbons.

Although I routinely curse the low New Zealand dollar and the exorbitant shipping some US sites want to charge, in my heart of hearts I know it’s the only thing that stops me going nuts with the fabric. I’m pleased to see that everyone feels that kind of pain sometimes, not just us at the ends of the earth :D

I used to just buy fabric for a particular project but now I find myself buying it ‘just because’ and fondling it occasionally as it languishes in my stash. I blame the internet for that, and discovering new sites like Retrosaria which sell fabric that’s just not available in stores here – because if you get one fabric you might as well get several to justify the postage right? :P

In Mandarin Chinese fabric is buliao or just plain bu! I’m new to collecting fabric and can’t really afford any of it, so your new blog is a great place to drool over it all!
